Troubleshooting Tips for your Furnace or A/C Unit
Furnace Tips
Natural or Propane Gas - Check to make sure the gas has not been disconnected by the gas company or that the propane tank is not empty.
Thermostat - For Heat: Be sure the thermostat is in the on position for heat. It must be set higher than the actual temperature of the room by at least 1 or 2 degrees. For Cooling: Be sure the thermostat is in the on position for cooling. It must be set lower than the actual temperature of the room by at least 1 or 2 degrees.
Breaker - Breaker must be in an “on” position. Turn it all the way off then back on again to reset the breaker.
Furnace Blower - Furnace blower door has a safety switch. If the blower panel door is not installed or closed correctly, all power to the furnace will disconnect.
Filter & Blower Wheel - A dirty filter or dirt-caked blower wheel will decrease heat flow. Replace the filter and call a service technician to clean the blower wheel.
Air Returns - Keep two feet of open space in front of the air returns to keep air flowing into the duct system. Vacuum vents regularly when replacing filters.
Unnatural Odors - Carbon Monoxide has no smell, but may be accompanied by other gases. Call for service.
Noises - Strange noises, explosions or bangs are a sign of a problem. Call for service.
Air Conditioning Tips
No Air Coming from Vents - If air is not blowing out of the vents, check the copper lines on the outdoor unit. If ice is present on the copper lines, turn the system off and check filters to see if they are dirty. If the filters are dirty, replace the filter and leave the unit off for approximately one (1) hour. If the filters are not dirty, leave the system off and call for service.
Warm Air Coming from Vents - If air is coming from the vents and it’s not cool air, check the outdoor unit to see if it is running. If it is not running, turn the breaker completely off and then turn it back to the “on” position to reset. If this does not correct the problem, call for service.
Water dripping from ceiling - Turn unit off imediately and call for service.
